The rest of the week had passed with no sign of any trouble, and Rafe Salvaggio and Eden Kingsley were both relieved, but for very different reasons. Rafe had been checking in with Eden every night, and it was sweet, but it wasn’t helping Eden’s anxiety. She couldn’t tell Rafe just how worried she was, and her calls made it harder knowing she was keeping things from her.

Her saving grace was the Saturday art lessons. She was with Rafe, and Rafe was focused on Bronte, and that meant Eden could truly relax.

Eden watched as Rafe worked with Bronte to put her paints away. They were covered in matching green paint, and Eden smiled at their mess. She had managed to keep the paint only on her hands.

Rafe handed Annie their messy paint smocks. “Who knew making circles for an hour could be so much fun?” Rafe laughed.

“Well, circles are pretty important, you know.” Annie smiled at the green-streaked Bronte.

“They all did such a good job today,” said Jude who had been helping Annie with the lesson. “Rafe, did you get a picture of Bronte helping her friend?”

“I think so. I think I filled up the memory card. I can’t believe I took so many pictures,” Rafe said as she hung the camera back around her neck. “I hope they’re decent.”

“I’m sure they’ll be fine.” Eden laughed as she tried to wipe some paint off Bronte. “Okay, we’re ready to go get cleaned up now.”

“See you later, Annie,” said Rafe and waved as she followed Eden into the house carrying Bronte. “This was a great day.”

“Yes, it was,” Eden agreed.

Rafe looked at Eden and smiled warmly. “Eden, I was just wondering if you had dinner plans for tonight.”

“No, I don’t have any dinner plans,” she said as she looked at Rafe smiling at her.

“So, you don’t have birthday plans?” she asked tentatively. “If you do, it’s okay.”

“No,” Eden said as she looked away. She didn’t really feel like celebrating this year. She wasn’t surprised Rafe remembered her birthday was Monday. Rafe seemed to always remember things like that. “I don’t have any plans.”

“Would you and Bronte like to stay and have lunch with me? I don’t have anything fancy, just some chicken strips and macaroni.” She shrugged and smiled because she had actually gone to the store just to have food to invite Eden for lunch. “I just thought it would be nice. You know, all of us having a meal together.”

Eden looked at the matching pair and nodded. “I think it would be nice too.”

“Okay,” said Rafe excited and pleased that they would be staying. “I’ll get Bronte and myself cleaned up. Then I can start lunch. You just sit down and relax, and we’ll be right back.” Rafe went to her room with Bronte and closed the door behind her.

Eden watched Rafe go and looked around the house at a loss for what to do. She went up to Rafe’s door and knocked. She then tried to talk to her through the door.
